Research InterestsĢ0th-century Irish poetry and fiction from 1960, especially representations of gender in work by both female and male writers (Heaney, Edna O'Brien, Banville, Ní Chuilleanáin, Anne Enright, Ronan Bennett) feminist approaches to Irish literature and culture Irish modernist poetry in the 1930s, especially Beckett Irish women writers, 1920s-50s (Bowen, Kate O'Brien) 16th- and 17th-century writing, especially English writing on Ireland, focusing on Spenser's work and colonial discourse (Petty, the Boate brothers, Vincent Gookin). Early modern literature: English representations of Ireland from Spenser to William Petty Spenser's View of the present State of ireland and colonial discourse Marvell's poetry and classical literature. Research, publication and teaching interests in two main fields: 1.Irish poetry and fiction, especially 20th-century, with a focus on: Irish modernism (especially Beckett) representations of gender, subjectivity and social change (especially Elizabeth Bowen, Kate O'Brien, Edna O'Brien, Banville, Anne Enright, contemporary poets including Ní Chuilleanáin, Ní Dhomhnaill, Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Bernard O'Donoghue, and others), Peig Sayers and women's autobiography, representations of femininity in canonical poets and criticism (Heaney, Montague) developing feminist psychoanalytic interpretations of contemporary Irish literature. 2.
